A recent article published in the Daily Illini, December 2008, explores some fascinating work at the intersection between design and technology, a key iFoundry theme. Professor William Bullock, professor and program leader for industrial design in the School of Art and Design, has been working with a group of students and PC Rebuilders and Recyclers of Chicago to discover new ways to use e-waste, the old electronic parts from discarded equipment. Prof. Bullock and his students spent the last semester researching current e-waste practices at the local, national, and international level and will investigate new uses for e-waste in the Spring 2009 semester. A Sustainable e-waste Design Competition will begin in January 2009 to encourage further exploration of this important national and global issue.
