Engineering liberalizes college HUM/SS courses

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Associate Dean Chuck Tucker today announced (here) that the College of Engineering has liberalized its list of what used to be called college humanities & social science courses.  Every engineering student has been required to take 6 hours of these courses, now called Liberal Education Electives:

The intent of this change is to widen the range of courses that our students can take, in order to build their skills and deepen their knowledge of the world in which they will work.  I hope you will encourage your advisees to take advantage of this opportunity.

Formerly, these courses included traditional general education courses as well as other courses from the social sciences and humanities.  The new list includes courses from “business, fine arts, foreign languages, and many other non-technical subjects.”  This change has been incorporated into the construction of iFoundry HAPI themes (human artifacts, processes, and interactions).  More information on the HAPI theme initiative is available here.
